I found his piece impacted me greatly for a number of reasons. I was asked to write a critique for it, and I am honoured to do so.

Visually it is quite profound. You have dark shades of blues, grays and purples swirling around a singular bright spot of colour. It is almost overwhelming in its meaning.

Originality is superb. I have rarely seen anyone use this approach. What makes the statement so grand is the simplicity behind it. You do not need a lot to make a bold statement. A little goes a long way.

Technique, though simple is brilliant. The placing of the pin against the hard and cold rocks as the water is rushing by is a zen approach to a bigger reality. I like your usage of color to tell a story of human nature. The photography itself is crisp and clean, and helps the overall impact stand out.

Impact is the most important part for this piece for me, and I will tell you what I see when I view it.

I see the rocks as the way life can be at times; cold, hard and colorless. Sometimes everything just seems to blur together in a hard existence. I see the one bright star, the yellow smiling pin as us, simple human beings trying to make our mark in the harsh realities of life, or at least trying to stay afloat and live a relatively happy life. The human nature to push forward and not give up, our positiveness, even when things can get hopeless, is conveyed through that simple bright smile. I see the water as time rushing and flowing by, a constant that we have no control over, but must learn to live with.

Over all, what I see in this is strength, hope and the human will to survive against all odds.

This is a beautiful and symbolic piece. Thank you for sharing it with us.
